Sarah X Dylan and Greg Nibler have embraced their recent unemployment (they were both formerly of the Rick Emerson Show on KUFO) and turned themselves into the spokespeople of a new era of podcasting and funemployment.
Crack open a Mickey's daily with this duo, who use the excuse that day-drinking and podcasting go hand in hand. And many seem to agree with this logic, as they've already scored themselves such guests as Meat Loaf, Tim Oakley (of Oakley Design, contributor to numerous films including 2012), and even Portland icon Elvis.
Both Nibler and Dylan aren't strangers to the wild world of media; aside from his work on KUFO, Nibler has spent the past 7 years in radio, has made his mark in the Portland music scene for 10 years in various bands, and continues to work in local film and television as an actor and writer.
Sarah Dylan has been on the airwaves for eight years, managing to make her mark on over six stations as a radio personality and producer. She also tried her hand as a television reporter on Channel 6 news for a year before accepting that being on a talk show is where her heart always remains.
And talk is exactly what Nibler and Dylan excel at, with their first episode consisting of much conversation about their new lot in lifethe daily happenings of newly unemployed Broadcast Professionals, Nibler's sports round-up Ball Talk, and various odds and ends from the world of pop culture, music, and everyday life.
Recorded daily in Nibler's newly converted spare bedroom/office, each show is up on the website (www.funemploymentradio.com) by 5 p.m. on weekdays.
Funemployment radio is also in the podcast section of itunes.com, and is already making its way up the charts.

Do you enjoy birdwatching? Would you like to learn a little more about the early conservations efforts to protect wild birds? In the Preface to The Bird Study Book, Pearson tells us This book was written for the consideration of that ever-increasing class of Americans who are interested in acquiring a greater familiarity with the habits and activities of wild birds. Attention is also given to the relation of birds to mankind and the effect of civilisation on the bird-life of the country. An avid ornithologist, T. Gilbert Pearson (1873-1943) was a co-founder in 1905 of the National Association of Audubon Societies of which he was first secretary and then president for many years. He was also a pioneer of the conservation movement in the United States, international bird protection and broad nature education for school-aged children. (Audubon Magazine. 42: 370371. Nov-Dec 1943) LibriVox volunteers ring in the new year with nineteen recordings of Ring Out, Wild Bells by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. This was the weekly poetry project for the week of December 31st, 2006. The Swiss Family Robinson has delighted generations of readers with its exciting tale of a family which, though shipwrecked, displays the right stuff and builds a charming colony that later, they do not want to leave. Cut off from the comforts and companionship of other humans, they use a familiarity with natural history and biology to find the resources and build the tools to construct a canoe, weave cloth, irrigate a garden, and turn an immense hollow tree into a lofty house with a spiral staircase. They domesticate buffaloes, wild asses, and monkeys. They establish farms and plantations. And finally, they have a terrifying encounter with natives from a nearby island.
Johann David Wyss, the author, did not live to complete his tale. Storytellers over the years have injected so many episodes into the various versions that probably none closely match the original. (Indeed, the Baroness de Montholieu expanded the book from two volumes into five when she translated it into French.) This effort was re-translated into English in 1849 by W.H.G. Kingston, abridging the edition severely. It follows the British sensibilities of the period in terms of sentence structure and emphasis. (Summary by Mark F. Smith) |
